Herbert Moles (or Moules) was baptised on 6th April 1864 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter and midwife called Fanny Moles, formerly Worbey, and her husband Thomas Moles, a mole and rat catcher. The family lived at The Riddy, which was a few cottages surrounded by fields, a little way removed from the town to the south-east. The family appears living there in the 1871 census.
By 1881 the family had moved to Ippollitts Folly, in the parish of St Ippolyts, just south of Hitchin. Herbert was described as an agricultural labourer at this time. Later that year Herbert had a brush with the law; he was one of six men charged with "throwing stones on the highway" on 7th August 1881. He was fined seven shillings and six pence at the Hitchin Petty Sessions.
On 2nd August 1890, aged 26, Herbert married Sarah Goodship. She had had a daughter called Annie the previous year. In all subsequent records Annie was referred to as Annie Moules, although whether this indicates that Herbert was actually her father or merely that she took his name as her stepfather is unknown.
Herbert and Sarah went on to have another six children together between 1891 and 1905, although the youngest died as a baby. Each census from 1891 to 1911 finds the family living at 3 Thorpes Yard on Queen Street, close to the centre of Hitchin. Sarah's widowed father was living with them in 1891. Herbert was described as a railway labourer in 1891, a road labourer in 1901 and a road sweeper in 1911.
Back in St Ippolyts, Herbert's father died in 1895.
Annie appears to have married in 1910, but died aged only 21 early the following year.
Herbert's mother died in 1922.
Sarah died in 1924, aged 62. Herbert survived her by about four years. He died in 1928, aged 64.
