Sarah Ann Fearn was born in 1853 at Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, daughter of Mary Fearn, formerly Adams, and her husband John Fearn, an agricultural labourer. When Sarah was still quite young the family moved about five miles north to the village of Hilton in Derbyshire, where they appear in the 1861 census living on the High Street. By 1871 they had moved again to Linton, about ten miles south of Hilton.

On 9th June 1873 Sarah was married back in Burton upon Trent to William Walton, who was originally from Lincolnshire. After their marriage they settled in the area around the adjoining villages of Linton and Castle Gresley. They had four children together, but all four died as babies. They had a son called Frederick who died aged four months in 1880, then a daughter in 1883, who presumably died shortly after birth as both her birth and death were registered as "female Walton". They then had a daughter called Annie who died aged one week old in 1886, and finally a son called John who died aged seven weeks in 1888.

The 1891 census finds Sarah and William living at Castle Gresley. William was working as a coal miner, and Sarah's parents and brother were living with them, as was one of William's nieces.

William died in 1896, aged 47.

The 1901 census finds Sarah working as a servant for a blacksmith called Thomas Orme on Bosworth Road in Castle Gresley. Six years later they married each other. The 1911 census finds them living at Cadley Hill in Castle Gresley.

Thomas died in 1913, aged about 61.

Sarah lived to be 75 years old. She died on 31st December 1928 at Castle Gresley.
