William Walton was born in 1848 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Walton, formerly Ward, and her husband Robert Walton, an agricultural labourer and shepherd. William was their youngest child. He appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Great Hale.

By 1871 William had left home and moved some 66 miles to the west to the town of Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, where he worked as a labourer in a brewery.

On 9th June 1873 William was married at Burton to Sarah Ann Fearn, who had been born in the town but as a child had moved with her parents to the Linton area in Derbyshire, about four miles south-east of Burton.

After their marriage they settled in the area around the adjoining villages of Linton and Castle Gresley. They had four children together, but all four died as babies. They had a son called Frederick who died aged four months in 1880, then a daughter in 1883, who presumably died shortly after birth as both her birth and death were registered as "female Walton". They then had a daughter called Annie who died aged one week old in 1886, and finally a son called John who died aged seven weeks in 1888.

Back in Great Hale, William's parents both died in February 1889; his mother on the 1st and his father on the 27th.

The 1891 census finds William and Sarah living at Castle Gresley. William was working as a coal miner, and Sarah's parents and brother were living with them, as was one of William's nieces, Annie Walton, daughter of William's brother Edward. Annie's mother had died in 1887, so perhaps William and Sarah whose own children had all died young took in their niece to raise.

William died in 1896, aged 47. He was buried at Linton on 20th May 1896. Sarah survived him by 32 years and remarried in 1907.
