Had an earlier marriage to a man with the last name Kerr (sometimes spelled Keir). Two children, William and Mary, were born of that marriage. On the 1861 census, Sarah Jane Kerr is a widow living in the household of James and Elenn Bell, in Euphemia Township, Lambton County. Mary Kerr, age 1, is living with her. William Kerr, age 5, is in the neighbouring household of Andrew and Sarah Bell. The children, with the surname Keir, appear in the household of John Short on the 1871 census, but not in 1881, but they'd be in their 20's by then.
