The Cane Creek Friends Meeting at Snow Camp, has the distinction of being the oldest Friends Meeting now in existence in North Carolina. It was established in 1751 by a group of 30 families from Pennsylvania who settled this area. The men and women met for worship, and then held separate business meetings. Sarah Chamness and Martha Thornton were appointed overseers in the first women's meeting. The minutes of the first man's meeting, state that Friends at New Garden, the Friends settlement which is now Guilford, asked permission to hold meetings there. Permission was granted, with Meetings being held at Cane Creek one month, and New Garden the next. There were 68 members at the end of the first year.
