Samuel Wallis of Chestertown, Kent County purchased Poplar Hill and adjoining Rye Hall in Queen Anne's County from Thomas Whillington for $5000. This was a total of 491 acres.

There is no evidence that Samuel and Bathsheba, widow of Jesse Cosden the elder, ever married and the Hugh Wallis family bible says that he never did. Their is a Samuel Wallis who was a Revolutionary War veteran. This is the probably Samuel Wallis.
