"Samuel Small, b. by about 1649; on 27 June 1665, 'Samuel Smale, having but one eye, was freed from common training' [EQC 3:268]; at the time of his death in 1674, John Marsh of Salem owed 'Sam[ue]ll Smal' £1 5s. [EQC 5:435]; in 1681 the widow of John Tomkins of Salem owed 'half a steer to Sam[ue]ll Small for building my said husband's barn, £2 1s.' and 'to the said Small out of my own estate in money on the same account, £1' [EQC 8:140]. (Edmund Batter was one of the appraisers of the Tomkins estate which, given the long association between Batter and John Small, makes the identification of Samuel as a son of John highly likely.)"
