He was called Sammy by everyone. His mother died very young and he was raised by his Uncle James Graham in Herdman. Sammy married the daughter of Greer and Margaret Dalzell Black. They moved to Manitoba where his wife died after giving birth to a son. He moved further west and met and married again and settled in Whatcom County, Washington. He had 5 children by the second wife. He died at the age of 90 (abt 1957) and is probably buried there. At this time (1999), it is believed that his 1st wife is buried at Anglican Church, Herdman. Witnesses at his baptism were his grandfather (Samuel, Uncle (James), and aunt (Ann Jane). In the 1920 Washington St. census, he was a farmer residing in Nooksack Township. Enumerated with Samuel were his wife Bertha M. age 44, b. in Massachusetts; his son Cecil L., age 23, b. in Canada; Cecil's wife, Gladys J., age 23, b. in Michigan; son Clifford, age 14, b. in Canada; daughter Violet M. age 11, b. in Canada; and daughter Mabel Rose, age 4, b. in Wash. In the 1930 Washington Census, he was residing in Lawrence Township with wife Bertha M. and daughter Mable R. (all 3 had aged 10 years from 1920 census). This census reported that he was 27 when he first married and Bertha was 19. In nearby Bellingham Township was son Clifford, age 25 and his wife Mildred, age 21 (they married in 1926 and he worked in a sawmill. Also nearby, was son Cecil L., age 33, his wife, Gladys, age 33, daughter Magdellene, age 10, son Gailland, age 8, and son Austin, born June 1926. Cecil reported that he worked as a salesman in drygoods and that they were age 21 when they married.
