According to the family: Samuel married 1st. a daughter of Greer Black and Margaret Dalzell. After they married in Herdman, Hinchinbrooke Twp., Huntingdon County, Quebec, they moved to Manitoba where the wife died after having given birth to a son. The family believes that the wife's body was brought back to Herman, Quebec for burial. The family knew that Samuel remarried and with the 2nd wife, had 5 children (which agrees with your data). The family believed that the 1st boy remained with Samuel. (They could have that part wrong.)
Note the coincidence of Samuel's 1st father-in-law's first name and Albertha (Bertha's) maiden name (Greer). People from this area of Quebec went "down east" to Massachusetts with regularity. Maybe Samuel's 2nd marriage has more meaning. Jim Vaugh
