  3. There are two death records for Samuel Francis in Medford VRs:
    Francis, Samuel, Mr. Sept. 29, 1775. [a. 40, CR1]
Francis, Samuel Jr., Mr. Oct. 15, 1776.
The age of 40 given to the first death record doesn't really fit either Samuel, the father being about 79, the son being about 47.

Interestingly, there are two death records for their wives
    Francis, --, w. Samuel, Apr. 21, 1774.
    Francis, --, w. Samuel Jr., May 15, 1775. [jaundice, a. abt. 40, CR1]
The age at death of the son's wife suggests the possibility that the church records were misapplied to the 1775 death, but that is mere suppostion.

The History of Medford, p. 513, assigns the 29 Sep 1775 to the father, and apparently 15 Oct 1775 to the son without comment about an age at death. It also demonstrates sparse knowledge of his children, so doesn't seem particularly authoritative.

There are two probate files. One opened 23 Apr 1776 [Middlesex 8428]. The other is opened in 1778 [Middlesex 8429], but has no inventory. The second definitely belongs to the father as is shown by the division of the estate. The first has a different administrator, so would appear to be a different person. The second has a division of real estate, but contradictorily is represented as insolvent, which suggests at least some crossover between the two files.
