Facts and Events
1850 US Census: Hamburg, Erie Co., NY: Roswell Barber, 37, farmer, b. NY He appears to be widowed. Living with him is a Clarinda Colvin, 49 and her daughter? Rachel, 24. From subsequent census examination, it appears that Clarinda is Roswell's soon-to-be mother-in-law. Clarinda is born VT. Also with this family are children I presume to be of Roswell's first marriage: Uriah Barber, 12 b. NY Philetus S. Barber, 10 b NY William F. Barber, 3 (I believe to be "my" Frank W.) b NY Rachael S., 1 b NY 1860: East Hamburg, Erie Co, NY Roswell T. Barber, 43, farmer b. NY Rachel S. Barber, 35, b. NY (second wife? right age to be dau of Clarinda Colvin who was living with Roswell Barber in 1850) Uriah Barber, 21 Philetus S. Barber, 19 Franklin Barber, 13 (again, i believe this to be Frank W Barber) Rachel C. Barber, 11 Harrison Barber, 9 (probably second wife's first child with Roswell) Sanford Barber, 5 Horace Barber, 3 Clarin(d)a Colvin is back with them, now 69, *b. VT* Living next door is a Julia Barber, 23, from Canada. I have no idea who she is. 1870: Still in East Hamburgh, Erie Co., NY: Roswell Barber, 59, farmer, b. NY Rachel, 44 Harrison, 18 Sanford, 16 "Cloramy" Colvin (still claiming she's 69) is still living with them. 1880: Rachel is a widow, 54, living with her son(s). There is a Laura, 32, married (but no spouse there) with three children; also in this house is Sanford, married to Sarah with a newborn daughter. Rachel is identified as mother. Also living with them is indefatigable "Clorana" Colvin, 78, identified as grandmother. |
