Ken Love, a former neighbour, only called him Escott. I met Ken when he lived at Livingstone Manor at age 95. Ken had a lot of memories about the Shiell's .... He remembered Robert Shiell as Escott, even though Bob never explained to any of his sons or daughters where the Escott came from.It came as a surprise to find that he had actually used it as a first name. His sister in law Ruth says he started using his first name when he went to work at Robert H. Cleland's. Ruth also says that the middle names of the Shiell's may have come from the surnames of the Doctor who attended their birth.Bob Shiell began working for Robert H. Cleland as a hired man and then married Robert's daughter Belle. In 1934, Bob and Belle farmed where Lorne Shearer later lived at L27/281/2 Concession 3. When Robert H. died, they moved back to the Cleland home farm. In 1946, Bob bought L27 C5 Elma. This farm was directly behind the one on the fourth and Bob, Belle and Harry worked both farms. In 1949, they moved to the farm on the sixth. Bob was noted for playing the fiddle and was usually invited to any local house parties. All of his daughters learned to play piano and would accompany their Dad. None of the boys ever learned to play. According to other family members, sane people would hide if Bob and his brother in law Joe Holmes ever put their heads together... The story about getting a Jehovah's witness to valiantly try to start a car by cranking it (while the key was turned off!!).....is a classic Bob and Joe story. His daughter in law Marlene( who stayed with them after her marriage) thought Bob had a very dry sense of humour and that his cousin Alonzo Shiell of Alberta was very much like him. Mom also says that Bob was very traditional father figure and that he definitely presided at the dinner table and did all of the talking and disciplining.A Shiell kid learrned to shut up and eat and listen to whatever topic Bob deemed appropriate to discuss.
