- ↑ Enlisted U.S. Navy 7 Nov. 1942. Received on board USS Salem 25 Dec. 1943 (New York, NY). Served on USS Salem at least through 30 Sep 1944. The USS Salem (CM-11) is the former cargo ship converted to a mine laying and net laying ship during WWII, not to be confused with the USS Salem (CA-139) Heavy Cruiser which is now part of the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum in Quincy, MA. The USS Salem (CM-11) was renamed USS Shawmut on 15 Aug 1945 so the new Heavy Cruiser could use the name.
