ROBERT PALMER............. .................................................UNCLE "BUZZ"............................................... Was one of the last of the OLD TYME Farriers and Blacksmiths of his time.I can remember him coming to our house in the early 1960's with a small trailer behind his old ford car. It held everthing a man needed to shoe and trim horses. He made his own horseshoes with a old hand cranked forge. He was one of the few people that were allowed to trim and shoe the Trotting Horses in the San Jaoquin Valley. When you do Trotters their step is so crucial to their feet. He would get his calipers out and true all four feet up!!! He handed this knowledge down to my father and older brother Tracy. I remember him welding with the forge which is no small feat. I never saw him strike a horse out of anger. He had a way of gaining their respect and KEEPING it...Example if a horse was laying on him as he was shoeing, he would keep the leg up and step aside letting it down close to the ground and letting go. When the horse tried to grab itself it was too late, It would put weight on the end of hoof and cause enough pain that it didn't want to lean that way anymore... He also would float teeth without putting them to sleep. My point is I never saw anyone that did their job with such ittle effort and it being one tough job as his tade He used to say"This country went to pot when they came out with the throw away razors"With out fail he would load all of us kids in his old car with horse shoes chaps and the smell of horses, and him and take us to the Carnation Ice Cream parlor on Union Ave. for Ice Cream..... He is missed by all... Robert Palmer Rhoads
