Robert Neill, solicitor and provost of Greenock 1871-6, was b. at Irvine and brought to Greenock at the age of 4; he often combated J.J. Grieve, who was provost 4 times, though they later became friends. A portrait of Robert was presented by his nephew Tom Neill (History of Greenock, 1921).
