This is probably John: Capt John Neill, age 52, d. 26oct1842 at 2 Virginia St., Greenock; see Agnes, Ann, Marion, Eliza Jane, Janet H., Capt Will, Capt John jun (inverclyde website). Death date is presumably wrong in an ancestry.com tree. It is unclear who Ann was.

In 1841 at Rue End St., Greenock, the following Neils (b. outside county) lived: John (1796, independent), Marion (1821), Robert (1823, writer), Thomas (1825, ship carpenter appr); also the following Neils (b. in Renfrews.): Eliza (1832), Stewart (1834), Janet (1836) (census). In 1841 John Neill, shipmaster, 59 Rue End St., (Greenock Directory). This John was a Capt, according to the marriage record of his youngest daughter Janet in 1863 (inverclyde website).
