Robert Lewis Mr. Robert Lewis was born on September 8th 1874, in the town of Woodville, Miss where he has lived all his life. He is the son of the late Capt. John South Lewis and Mary Gildart Lewis. His paternal grandfather, who was born in 1790, and latter moved to Harding county, Kentucky, was among the early settlers of this county, and was a colonel in the Seminole War. His maternal grandfather Judge Isaac D Gildart was a prominent lawyer of the Woodville bar and a decedent of Capt. Francis Gildart who came to America in the Revolutionary days as a British officer in Tarlton's Royal Cavalry. His father, Capt. John S Lewis, former editor of the Woodville Republican was captain in Co. K, 16th Miss. Regiment, and gave four years of service in the confederate army. Mr. Lewis attended the public and private schools of this town and, at the age of sixteen, entered The Republican office as a printer. This position he held until the death of his father on September 9th 1900, when he became the editor and owner of the paper, which connection continues to this day. he has never been a candidate for office, but has held a number of responsible positions. He has been chairman of the county Democratic Executive Committee for the past sixteen years; was president of the Mississippi Press Association: member of the Exemption Board of the county during the late war: treasurer of Woodville Chapter of Red Cross; is a member of Maronic and Odd Fellows fraternities, and a member of the board of Stewards of the Woodville Methodist church. Aside from the newspaper he has other business interests being associated with Mr. H. P. Jones in the insurance firm Robert Lewis Agent. On September 11th 1907, Mr Lewis married Miss Hellen Waring Latane, of Tappahannock, Essex county, Virginia, who is the daughter of the late Samuel Peachy and Mrs Margaret Davis Latane. They had three children, Bertha Latane, aged fifteen: Margaret Davis fourteen, and John South, ten years all students of Woodville schools. One child Eunice Wescott died in Infancy
