Ethel Lewis, age 3, granddaughter of E. W. Lewis [Eunice Westcott (Higgins) Lewis)]

This is the only online source I can find for the origin of Ethel Lewis. It doesn't make it clear whose child she was, as both John S Lewis (whose wife died in 1876) and Addie Lewis (married but her husband is not in this record) are listed in the household of E. W. Lewis. At first glance, it appears that Ethel was Addie's daughter, as she is listed at the end of the household, after Addie's children, whereas John's other children (May and Robert) are listed before Addie and her children. However, she is not listed in age order (Ruth, age 1, is listed before her). Therefore, she may have been missed in the initial transcription from the household forms and added at the end of the list.

  4.   It is not certain that she was the daughter of John S Lewis and Mary Gildart. If she was, she was most likely born Jul 1876 (not Jul 1875 which was 10 months after her brother Robert's birth, nor 1877, after her mother died). Since Mary apparently died in Jul 1876, and since most trees give Ethel's middle name as Lawton, it seems likely that she was John and Mary's daughter. Her age (3) in the 1880 census supports a birth date of Jul 1876.
