1907 - Robert was the lighthouse keeper at Hell's Gates, Strahan, and his wife and sons had been to Hobart on family business and were returning home on board the ship. The older daughter, Ruby, had been taken to school at Hobart and left there. Family history has it that Marion was meant to return on a later ship, but because of an argument she left Hobart early. He watched helplessly as the "Kawatiri" foundered at Hell's Gates, Macquarie Harbour, and he saw his wife and children, William Walter and Jack Horace, drown.
