Facts and Events
Marion's first name is variously recorded as Marion, Marian, Marianne and Mary Ann. 1907 - She drowned, along with her two sons, William Walter and Jack Horace, in the wreck of the "Kawatiri" at Hell's Gates, Macquarie Harbour. Marion's husband was the lighthouse keeper at Hell's Gates, Strahan, and his wife and sons had been to Hobart on family business and were returning home on board the ship. The older daughter, Ruby, had been taken to school at Hobart and left there. Family history has it that Marion was meant to return on a later ship, but because of an argument she left Hobart early. The husband watched helplessly as the vessel foundered and he saw his wife and children drown. Even on a calm day the seas churn and thrash between the narrow heads called Hell's Gates and even an error could bring doom to a ship trying to enter the harbour. |
