192–193. Robert Galbraith was born in Derry Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about 1742, and died in Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1793. Mary Hendricks died in Allen Township in 1770. They were married in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, March 27, 1762. She took the name Mary Galbraith. He is the son of James and Elizabeth (Bertram) Galbraith. She is the daughter of Tobias and Agnes (_____) Hendricks. The will of Tobias Hendricks, dated November 29, 1778, mentions Elizabeth, Agnys, and Mary as children of his daughter, Mary, and her husband, Robert Galbraith. They had three children:

i. Elizabeth Galbraith: She married Benjamin Hunt. ii. Agnes [Nancy/Ann] Galbraith: She married James Pollock. iii. Mary Galbraith: She married William Wray.

His second marriage was to Mary Dill. She was born in Monaghan Settlement, York County, Pennsylvania, on Monday, May 25, 1747, and died in County of Centre, Pennsylvania, before December 17, 1825. Her name from her first marriage was Mary (Dill) Brannan. She is the daughter of James and Jean (Armstrong) Dill. They had four children:

i. James Galbraith was born in Allen Township. ii. Jane Galbraith was born in Allen Township. She married Joseph Williams. iii. Robert Galbraith was born in Allen Township in 1782, and died in Butler County, Pennsylvania, in 1826. As a young man he moved to Butler County and married Mary White. They had six children. iv. John Galbraith [#96]: He was born in Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., on March 29, 1785, and died in Arcanum, Darke County, Ohio, U.S.A., on September 22, 1855.

Per The Galbraith Families of Donegal Township, ..., Robert moved from Derry Township to East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, in 1761 with his father and brothers John and Andrew. In 1762 the tax records show James Galbraith with 500 acres of land. Robert's name first appears on the tax records in 1763 with 100 acres while James has only 400 acres. Clearly, James has given 100 acres to his son. Court records of Cumberland County document the deaths of both Robert and his brother, John, and list the names of their children, proving that these children were also the grandchildren of James of East Pennsboro. Deeds, wills, and other documents prove that the land on which Robert and John lived was given to them by their father, James.

By 1768, Robert was no longer in East Pennsboro but in Allen Township on land that James had purchased in 1767 at a sheriff's sale, including a mill at Lisburn.

Robert was a soldier in the American Revolution. His name appears in a list of "Rangers on the Frontiers 1778–1783", page 604, vol. 4, Fifth Series, Pennsylvania Archives, as well as in other lists of Cumberland County militia commanded by Col. James Dunlap and Capt. William Morehead. The children of Robert and Mary, his second wife, appear in the given order in the court records at Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

The will of Mary Galbraith was dated March 20, 1821, proved on December 17, 1825, in the Borough of Bellfonte, county of Centre, Pennsylvania; recorded in Franklin County, Ohio, volume A, page 154. It refers to sons John, Robert, and James (he is "to pay off suit Elizabeth Hunt [her step-daughter] brought against me in the state of Ohio."), and grand-daughters Maria and Jane Williams. It also mentions "all property in Pennsylvania or Ohio, particularly the property in Franklin County [Ohio] left me as one the heirs of my brother, John Dill."

The will of [what is certainly] her brother, John Dill, dated June 5, 1802, probated February 29, 1816, in Franklin County, Ohio, recorded in Volume A, pages 50–52, mentions his wife, Mary Dill, brothers Robert and Thomas Dill, sisters Mary Galbreath and Rebecca Johnston, and niece Mary Dill [daughter of his deceased brother, Armstrong Dill].

The following are from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, at Carlisle.

Letters were granted Mary, widow of Robert Galbreath of Allen Township, August 6, 1793. Docket 3, page 153, list the children in this order: Nancy, Mary, Elizabeth; James, Jane, Robert, John. Docket 3, page 163, September 9, 1795, Mary asks the court to appoint guardians for Robert and John who are under 14 years of age. Docket 3, page 184, Ann (nickname for Nancy) petitions the court to sell the land of the estate of her deceased father.

Common errors in the recorded ancestry of this Robert Galbraith William H. Egle, a noted Pennsylvania historian, wrote Pennsylvania Genealogies which included much information on early Galbraith families. Unfortunately, he did not have all of the information that has been found by subsequent researchers, and became confused by the many men named James and Robert. Many other writers have propogated his information (and mistakes), including the authors of The Descendants of John and Elizabeth Aikman Galbreath which this author relied on for some time.

On page 14 of section 3 of The Galbraith Families of Donegal Township... begins a detailed analysis of the lineage of the several men named Robert and James from the original John of Ireland. In summary, the left column of the following table shows the incorrect lineage and the right shows the correct one. Note that in this case, the correct lineage is one generation shorter.

John of Ireland James (Sr.) ca.1666–1744; m. Rebecca Chambers Wrong lineage Andrew ca.1692–____ m. Mary Kyle John ca.1715–1757 m. Jennett McCullough Correct lineage

James (Jr.) 1703–1786 m. Elizabeth Bertram Robert ca.1740–1795 m.(1) Mary Hendricks, (2) Mary Dill

Note that Andrew and James Jr. are brothers; sons of James Sr. Also, "McCullough" is probably more correctly written McCauley.

There are many more errors in the work of William H. Egle than are corrected here. Some of them will totally invalidate some applications for membership in the D.A.R. This is not to asperce all of Egle's work, he was a skilled historian, but he was lacking information and made some assumptions that have proved to be false.
