Robert was eleven years of age when he left Plymouth with his mother, brothers and sisters on the Hamela Mitchell.

Robert and Elizabeth farmed at "Longforest" Grass Valley, which had been taken up sometime between 1866-1868. All twelve of Robert and Elizabeth's children were born at "Longforest". The farm at "Mt Dick" (between Malabine and Jerrapullen) was taken up in the 1896, though the family didn't move there until 1897.

The youngest children Herbert Sarah and Alfred walked from "Mt Dick" to the Malabine school. The general concensus of opinion is that "Longforest" was not sold at this time, but was farmed by the older boys. Robert also had a town lot. (Lot 81, acquired in 1888) which was nearer Carter's Pool, an area in which his father and brothers also owned land.

When the gold rush started (Southern Cross 1887), Robert like many of other small farmers of the Northam area, added to their incomes not by prospecting, but by carting goods to the gold fields towns. Sandalwood was back-loaded to Perth. Robert had an advantage over other business. Where they only operated in slack periods on the farm, Robert was able to leave "Longforest" in the care of Elizabeth and their sons.

In 1902 Robert and Elizabeth retired to Mandurah, leaving "Mt Dick" to be managed, first by George and then by the younger brothers. They lived at first in Fremantle Road in a lime stone cottage which had orignally been Robert Peels, when their son Jack retired he took over this house while they moved to Pinjarra Road. They also owned ten acre block, where the present goverment school now stands.
