MILITARY:

Richard A. Seaver, a resident of Pomfret VT, enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on 2 May 1861, and in Company B, 1st Infantry Regiment of Vermont on 9 May 1861. He was mustered out of the same unit on 15 August 1861 in Brattleboro VT. He enlisted as a Sergeant on 19 September 1861and joined Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment of Vermont on 19 November 1861. He was taken as a Prisoner of War on 6 July 1863 at Hagerstown MD, and paroled on 28 December 1863. He was promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on 4 June 1864, effective 24 June 1864. He was mustered out of his unit on 18 November 1864 ["Military Records of Individual Civil War Soldiers," Historical Data Systems, Provo UT, accessed at "American Civil War Soldiers" database on www.ancestry.com].

At the time of Civil War, enlisted in a VT regiment as a 3 -months man (private), then re-enlisted in the VT cavalry for 3 years. He was in many battles and skirmishes and was wounded twice, though not seriously. He was in the vicinity of Gettysburg during the battle and was taken prisoner at Hagerstown the next day. After being confined in the Confederate prison at Belle Isle, near Richmond for six months, he was exchanged and allowed to return home. He later joined his regiment and served the remainder of his enlistment, participating in the siege at Richmond. He was mustered out as Lieutenant [John C. Rambeau web page].
