    "Richard (Russell), Charlestown, came with newly m. w. Maud, 1640, from Hereford, as common. is told, where he was b. 1611, s. of Paul. but apprent. 4 Oct. 1628, at Bristol. They were adm., of the ch. 22 May 1641; and he was freem. 2 June foll. had James, b. 1 Oct. 1640, bapt. 30 May foll. Daniel, H. C. 1669; Catharine; and Eliz. b. 12 Oct. 1644; but neither the b. nor bapt. of either of the two preced. is kn. His w. d. 1652; and perhaps 1655, he m. Mary, wid. of Leonard Chester of Hartford, had no ch. by her, and d. 14 May 1676, in this 65th yr. hav. by will prov. for sev. good works. The wid. d. 30 Nov. 1688, aged a. 80 says gr.st. His d. Catharine m. 29 Nov. (of the yr. wh. Frothingham 145, calls 1654, by mistake) William Roswell; and Eliz. m. 24 or 29 Aug. 1664, Nathaniel Graves or Greaves; and next, 15 Oct. 1684, Capt. John Herbert of Reading, and d. 18 Oct. 1714, aged 70 yrs.     "Mr. Russell, whom Frothingham calls the ancestor of a distinguished family in this country, was of a family no less celebrated in Eng. He was b. in Hertford, Hertfordshire, Eng., in 1611. Savage says his father was Paul Russell, and that this son Richard was an apprentice in the City of Bristol, 4 Dec., 1628 and came to New Eng. with his newly marr. wife Maude _____, in the ship St. John, in 1639-40. It appears of record that the 'City Council of London, gave permission to the ship St. John, Richard Russell and partners, Masters, Stephen Goodyear, Mcht. New Haven, Owner, Jan. 26, 1639-40, to transport 250 passengers to New Eng.' Mr. R. was adm. inhab. of Charleston, Mass., 1640; and with his wife, was adm. to Ch., 22 May, 1641; and made freeman 2 June, same year; chosen a selectman of C., 1642, and his name stands at the head of the Board of Selectmen for 17 yrs., and as a member 26 yrs. In 1644 was chosen a rep. to Gen. Ct., for 2 successive yrs., and Speaker of the House five years; was an Assistant 16 yrs. and for 20 yrs. Treasurer of the Colony. He was also largely engaged in commerce and merchandizing; and in navigation as early as 1645. With his son, James, he built wharves and storehouses in the Charleston River near where the C. bridge now crosses to Boston and was one of the largest real-estate owners in the country, including by purchase from Dea. Edward Collins, 1600 acres of ld. which composes the greater part of the present town of Medford, Mass., he also owned ¼ of the Pemaquid Patent (now Saco, Me.) and d. possessed of a large fortune. His wife Maude, d. 1652; and in 1655 he m. Mary, wid. of Leonard Chester, of Weth.

    Hon. Richard Russell d. at C. 14 May, 1676, in his 65th yr.; will dated 29 Mch., 1674; prob. 18 May, 1676; mentions his wife Mary (Chester) Russell, her eld. dau., wife of Samuel Whiting and 7 ch.; her second dau. then living, wife of Thomas Russell and 2 ch.; her third dau. Eunice; and her son Stephen Chester; his own son James R., wife and 3 ch.; his dau. Katherine, wife of Wm. Rosewell and her son Wm.; his dau. Elizabeth, wife of Nath'l Graves; his sister Elizabeth (Corbett); his sister Sarah (wid.) of Bristol, Eng.; sister Mary (Newell,) wid. and her sons John and Joseph, Mary (Golden) and Eleazer Allen. He gave the £100 to the Ch., £50 towards a home for the ministry; £200 to the Town of C. for a poor fund; £100 to Harvard Coll. As 'a continuous revenue to educate two poor students.'"
