Will Transcript

In the name of God Amen. I Richard Covington of St Anns parish in Essex County being sick and weak of body but of perfect sense and memory thanks be to God do make this my last will and Testament in manner following first my body to the earth whence it was taken to be buried in such decent manner as my Exrs hereafter named shall think fit trusting through the merits of my blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to be received into Eternal happiness.
Item. I give unto my daughter Mary Gross ten shillings she having been formally advanced by me.
Item I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Searle ten shillings she being formally advanced by me.
Item. I give unto my daughter Sarah Smith ten shillings she having been formally advanced by me.
Item I give unto my daughter Ann Hawkins ten shillings she having been formally advanced by me.
Item I give unto my grandson Covington Searle a negro girl named florce with her increase to my said grandson and his heirs forever reserving for my daughter Elizabeth Searle the use of the said negro flores and her increase during the said Elizabeth natural life.
Item I give unto my son Richard Covington all my tract of land whereon I now live to him & his heirs forever,
Item I give to my son Francis Covington the plantation whereon he now lives with as much land nearest thereto adjoining as will make two hundered acres to him & his heirs forever.
Item I give to my said son Francis all that my tract of land in sourth farnham Parish on the brances of Gibsons Creek to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give unto my two sons Thomas & John Covington all the remaining part of my land in St. Anns parish on the branches of Occupatia Creek to be equally divided between my said two sons Thomas & John & their heirs forever.
Item my will is that if either of my sons Francis, Thomas, or John should die without issue lawfully begotten, his part of land by this my will given shall be equally between the survior of them.
Item my desire is my loving wife Ann Covington have her right of dower in this my dwelling plantation and my seat of land purchased of Gandy? on the branches of Gibsons Creek.
Item my will is that all my Negroes stock of cattle hoggs and other kinds and all my household goods and other estate of all qualities and property whatsoever be equally divided among my loving wife and my sons Richard, Francis, Thomas, John & my daughter Winefret Covington and that my negros herein given my said sons & my daughter Winefret be to them and their heirs forever and that the negros herein given unto my loving wife after her decease shall be equally divided amongst my said sons & daugher Winefret and their heirs forever.
Item my will is my son Francis and daugther Winefret take their estates herein bequeathed them (a few words of last line of page very dark and hard to read) ? possession ? ? my decease.
Item my will is my sons Thomas & John have and receive their estates herein given them when they shall obtain to the age of eighteen years.
Item my will is my son Thomas & John Covington be under the care and tuition of Thomas Waring? until they attain the age of eighteen years aforesaid.
Lastly I do make and appoint my sons Richard and Francis Covington Exrs and my daughter Winefret Exerx of this my last will and Testament.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th of March 1725.

At a Court held for Essex County on Tuesday the 19th day of July 1725.
The within last will and Testament of Richard Covington was proved by the oaths of Richard Covington & Francis Covington two of the Exrs therein named & being further proved by the oaths of the witness thereto was admitted to record.
