Person:Rensselaer Adsit (1)

According to several queries on the Ancestry.com Adsit message board in Oct/Nov 2002, Rensalaer may be related to William and Samuel Adsit who emigrated first to Clinton Co., Ohio , then Indiana, and finally Iroquois Co., Illinois about 1853.

 According to an IGI record, he was the son of John Adsit and married Margaret Thompson in 1832 in Warren Co., Ohio.  He came to Boone Co. Indiana about 1837 and to Iroquois Co., Illinois about 1853.
 According to 'Shazzam' GenCircle, he was the son of John Jay Adsit and Lucy Reynolds.  Rensselaer and Margaret had children Richard Palmer 1833, Julian 1837, and Mary E. 1835. {Shazzam, by Sharyn, <http://www.gencircles.com/users/salunn/4/data/3137>, 3 Sept 2008}
  He is probably the 'Ransalan Adset' listed in the 1850 census for Boone Co., Indiana. He is 42, farmer from New York with $800.  His wife Margaret is 42, from Ohio and the children are Palmer 17; Mary E. 16; and Jolean f, 13 -- all born in Ohio. {p.145b, Boone Co.  I believe Rensslaer married Mary (Lee) Shankland, widow of William J., sometime after 1850 and moved to Iroquois Co.
 In the 1860 census for Crabapple, Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, 'Ranslaer [indexed as Ransan] Adzett' is 52, farmer from New York; Mary is 53 born Ohio; [stepson] Arthur S. [Shankland] is 16 born Indiana; and William Baird is 23 from Ohio. {p. 245}  His daughter Mary is living next door with her husband James Crawford Pugh.
  In the 1870 census for Watseka, Iroquois Co., Illinois, 'Ransallier Adsit' is a retired farmer, age 62 from New York, and his wife Mary is 64 from Ohio.  Also in the household is John C. Godfrey (?), age 38 from Ohio, grocer. {p.523}
 In the 1880 census for Watseka, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Rensalaer Adsit, retired farmer, age 71 from New York (parents New York) is head of household.  His [second?] wife Mary is 73, born Ohio, (parents Maryland).  Listed as 'step daughter' is 'Salena James', age 45, born Kentucky (father Pennsylvania, mother Ohio).  {p.246d, NARA T9-0214}  Mary's sons Arthur and Johnson are also in Iroquois Co in 1880.
 A probate file for 'Rensselaer Adsit' is listed in the Iroquois Co. probate files, 1870-1898.
