The Hazen Family in America A Genealogy by Tracy Elliot Hazen, Ph.D. Edited for Publication by Donald Lines Jacobus Robert Hazen, M.D. Thomaston, Conn. 1947 Page 254 Rebecca Hazen (Joseph 5, Joseph 4, Thomas 3, Thomas 2, Edward 1), born at Lebanon, Conn., 28 Aug. 1764, died at North Hero, Vt., 20 Sept. 1847; married at Lebanon, Conn., 12 Mar. 1786, Jedediah Perkins Ladd, her third cousin, born at Norwich, Conn., 16 Feb. 1767, died at North Hero, 2 June 1845, son of Abner and Abigail (Perkins) Ladd, and granddaughter of Jedediah and Temperance (Hazen) Perkins. They removed from Connecticut to become pioneer settlers of North Hero. The date 1787 is given in the Ladd Genealogy, but Mrs. Julia (Doty) Kerr remembered positively that she was told that Jedediah's first two children were born at Lebanon, and that her mother Lydia was about two years old when they went to North Hero. She stated that uncle Dan Hazen went with them and that there was only one family there before them who lived at the other end of the island [probably Enos Wood's family-T. E. H.]. Solomon Hazen and the rest came later. The island was a wilderness and for the first six months Mrs. Ladd had to keep a fire day and night to scare away the bears. She did not dare step out for a pail of water and leave the two little girls alone, as the house had only a blanket for a door. In 1803 Jedediah P. Ladd built the first store and hotel at North Hero. He was postmaster, sheriff, Register of Probate and Judge of the County Court. He was also a Representative in the Legislature. |
