1930 census - Ray is 9 living on Upshur St. in Washington, DC with his parents, Olie O Tarrant and Miriam M Tarrant, his sister, Helen P Tarrant, and his grandmother, Ira [Iza] P Powell.

Ray spent many years in the Boy Scouts and eventually became an Eagle Scout. During his growing up years in Washington, DC he was friends with the boys that would eventually become his brothers-in-law. The boys spent a lot of time on the water and grew up to love sailing.

Ray married in 1943; served in World War II; and by 1955 had traded city life for country life where he and his wife raised 6 children. Though Ray worked in Baltimore, in the evenings and on the weekends and holidays he was a devoted husband, a great father and teacher, a farmer, a hunter, and a fireman.

National Archives: US World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946: Raymond G Tarrant; 1921; white, citizen; Dist. of Columbia; enlistment date 31 Mar 1944; enlistment state: Maryland, Fort George G Meade; Private; enlistment ofr the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law; 4 years of high school; married; civil occupation: car mechanic, railway or aerial phototopographer or Draftsman or Mechanical Draftsman, Structural Draftsman, Electrical Draftsman (telephone and telegraph) or Draftsman, Topographic or Tool Designer or Tracer or Cartographer

Ray's military records are not available from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO as there was a fire 12 JUL 1973 in which they were destroyed. However, I did obtain a Certification of Military Service that shows Ray served in the Army from 31 MAR 1944 to 20 MAR 1946 as a Private First Class with an Honorable Discharge. During World War II, Ray served in several countries in Europe including France, Czechoslovakia and Germany.

After raising a family of six, Ray retired from Washington Aluminum Company and moved from the farm in West Friendship, MD to the eastern shore and became the manager of a local boat yard. Some of his hobbies were being a volunteer fireman, hunting, woodworking and being in and around the water - sailing!!

His funeral services were held at First Wesleyan Church, 17 AUG 1987 in Easton, MD and he was cremated and buried at Veterans' Cemetery, Hurlock, MD. The cemetery is located by going Rt. 50 East to Easton; turn left on Rt. 331 (Dover Rd.) This goes for 18-20 miles crossing the Choptank River and going through at least one small town and residential section; just before Rt. 318 Rt. 331 bears to the right and there are signs to the cemetery. Daddy's plot is section D row 32 grave # 18.
