MEBANE — Mr. Ralph Dewey Sykes Jr.., 79, of 311 Austin St., died Friday, May 4, 2001, at his home after three years of failing health, one month critical.

Born Oct. 17, 1921 in Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs.. Dora Alline Funderburk Sykes and the son of Mr. Ralph Dewey Sykes Sr. and Mrs.. Mary Margaret Graves Sykes, both deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Barbara Laws of Rougemont and Ms. Faye Johnson of Hillsborough; two sons, Mr. Tony Sykes of Rougemont and Mr. Buck Sykes of Douglasville, Ga.; a sister, Mrs.. Betty Dorsett of Mebane; and a brother, Mr. Roger Lee Sykes Sr. of Haw River; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs.. Vera Sykes Freeland, who died April 28., and Mrs.. Mildred L. Dandridge; and a brother, Mr. Tyree B. Sykes.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Fred Bunts. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
