  • Philip J. Betts, age 32 (slightly off), single, clerk; father born Bavaria; mother born Hesse Darmstadt, single; living in the same county as a Henry Betts, exact right age with similar info about parents. I.e., likely brothers. This Philip J. Betts is enumerated with a Wilson Vandiver, store owner. Perhaps he is a clerk, living with the man for whom he works.

January 2004: I'm uneasy about the above being son of OUR Jacob Betz. There is increasing evidence that an 1846 birth year is accurate for the above Philip J. Betz. Yet we have clear documentation that our Philip J. Betz was born in the 1843/44 period. That said, Noreen Luke Steele has documented that he is brother to Henry J. Betz who we *are* fairly confident is son of Jacob. Still, would like to see greater confirmation of this. Other researchers should proceed with caution.
