Philip Ritter

was born on 10 Mar 1820 at Pennsylvania, United States, obit lists born in New York.  On 1 Dec 1844 at Wayne Co., Ohio, United States, at the age of 24 Philip Ritter first married Louisa Ann Kope age 16, daughter of John Henry Kope and Magdalena VanHan. 

Philip's occupation was as besides farming, he was a carpenter, and also was an undertaker for nearly 50 years. He was an expert cabinet maker as well.

On 25 Mar 1855 Philip Ritter's second marriage at the age of 35 was to Martha Gillander age 22 Philip's first wife died in March 1854 and Martha's first husband died in Sep 1852.

    Philip Ritter and Martha Ritter appeared on the 1860 Federal census of Steuben twp., Steuben Co., Indiana, United States, enumerated 11 Jun 1860, real estate value $2800; personal property $695. They have six of Philip's children, Henry, Mary, Jacob, Martha, Emma and Barbara. Also there is Jane Anderson, age 10, born in Ireland (Martha's child from previous marriage). They are living on a road with two other Ritter families, Theobold and Joseph.  He witnessed "In the summer of 1859 Rev. H.W. Cherry organized the Sugar Grove Circuit of the North Ohio Conference, which included all of the United Brethren Churches in Steuben County. The Mount Zion Church-- a frame church built in Steuben Township on Section eight near Golden Lake, was established in 1865. Acoording to the original deed the land for the church was sold on August 22, 1865, by Henry and Mary Ritter to the trustees, Philip Ritter, Jonas Mountz, Martin V. Gain, and their successors. In 1879 the North Ohio Conference was held in that church; Bishop J. Dickson presided. In 1903 the church building was moved across the road to its present location' it was improved and rededicated at that time" in 1865 at Steuben Co., Indiana, United States.

They have seven children listed, Henry, Minerva (Henry's wife), Martha, Barbara, Theophalus, Lovina and Elmer.  "In 1873 there was published in the columns of the Steuben County newspapers a call for a meeting to plan the organization of an Old Settlers' Society, such as had already been started in many counties of Indiana...

The first Jubilee for Old Settlers was held September 25, 1873, and a large crowd gathered at the County Court House. There was no formal program planned, and the day was spent largely in reminiscing of incidents, anecdotes, and landmarks of the early days. Music was furnished by the Angola Brass Band... The Steuben County Pioneers' Association was organized August 9, 1873, and the twenty-fifth Anniversary meeting was held on August 11, 1898, with an estimated crowd of 10,000 in attendance."

Philip Ritter had an historical biography printed in 1885 at Steuben Co., Indiana, United States:

    "Philp Ritter resides on section 6, Steuben Township, where he settled in July, 1852.  He purchased his first land, 128 acres, of Louis Carter.  No improvements had been made, the land being heavily timbered.  His first home was of hewn logs and was built in the spring of 1852.  In 1868 he built his present residence.  He now has 194 acres of land, about 125 acres of which are improved and very productive.  Mr. Ritter is a brother of Henry Ritter, of this Township, and was born in the same Township in New York, in 1820.  He was apprenticed in his youth to the trade of a carpenter, and has worked at his trade and also as an undertaker nearly 50 years.  Since coming to Indiana he has carried on his farm in connection with his other business.  Mr. Ritter has been twice married.  His first wife was Lucy Ann Kope, daughter of Henry Kope, and early Settler of Wayne County, Ohio.  Mrs. Ritter died in March, 1854, leaving three children -- Henry, Mary and Jacob.  Mr. Ritter then married Mrs. Martha (Gillander) Anderson, a native of the north of Ireland.  To them have been born 8 children, six of whom are living -- Martha, Barbara, Theophilus, Levina, Eleanor and Orpha.  Mr. and Mrs. Ritter are members of United Brethren Church.  Mr. Ritter has accumulated his property by industry and economy, and by his integrity has gained the confidence of the entire community".  

Philip's and Martha Ritter religion was a member of Lake Valley United Brethren church at Steuben Co., Indiana, United States.

    Philip Ritter lived in 1897 at Pleasant Lake, Steuben twp., Steuben Co., Indiana, United States; listed as a "farmer," he owns 128 acres in Section 7 and 66 acres in Section 6.  He died on 7 Jan 1898 at Steuben Co., Indiana, United States, at age 77. 

Philip had an obituary Jan 1898 Steuben Co., Indiana, United States,

     "Philip Ritter was born in New York in 1820, and died near Mount Zion, Steuben County, Friday, January 7, 1898.  The funeral was held Monday at 10:30".  

Philip Ritter was buried in Jan 1898 at Mount Zion Cemetery, Golden Lake, Steuben Co., Indiana, United States, on marker with both wives. I have a photo of the tombstone.
