I am basing my belief that he is father of Philip E. Clabeaux by his appearance on an 1889 deposition on behalf of Margaret Betz Smith, on which he states that he is age 70 (therefore born about 1819), living at 18 Sycamore Street, and that Charles (and presumably Margaret) lived with him from 1872-1877. This Philip's son, Philip, will marry Margaret's niece (and possible namesake?). The son Philip is dead by the time of this deposition. Subsequent census research (see below) confirms that he is the father of Philip E. Clabeaux.

Dennis Clabeaux says that Philip's mother was Katherine Maire, not Anna Marguerite. I'd sure love confirmation of that.

We also find him living next door to Philip Betz in the 1860 and 1870 censuses.

1850 census: 4th ward, p. 574? Philipp Clabo, 32, ship carpenter, b. France Phaney, 30, b. France Philipp, 6, b. NY Peter, 2, b. NY Julia, 4 months, b. NY

Also in 1850 census, ward 4 is a Peter Clabo, 24, b. France, carpenter and joiner, with wife Elizabeth, 21, b. Germany. Brother to Philipp?

Also in 1850 census, ward 4, is Gustus Clabo, living almost next door to Peter (but on next page), age 27, butcher, b. France, with wife (I think), Polina, 23, b. France, and an Anthony Clapin, 59, mason, born France (and quite wealthy with an estate of 15,000). I wonder if Anthony is the patriarch?

1860 census: 5th ward, p. 140: Philip Clabo, 40, ship carpenter, b. France Philip Clabo Jr., 24, b. NY Peter Clabo, 12, b. NY [not in 1870 census] Julia Clabo, 10, b. NY Emily Clabo, 8, b. NY Mary Clabo, 6? b. NY Ellen Clabo, 3, b. NY

1870 census: 4th ward, p. 578 (stamped): #1016 (next door to #1017 Philip Betz) Philip Clabor, 51, b. France, carpenter Julia, 20, keeping house, b. NY Allie, 13, b. NY (Ellen above) Maria, 15, b. NY (Mary above)

1875 NY State census: Ward 5, 3rd District, pg. 41 Phillip Clabeau 45 M France, Wid, Ship Carpenter Julia 25 F Dau, Erie Co, Dressmaker Mary 19 F Dau, Erie Co, Clerk in print office

A possible father for this Philip is nearby in the 1870 census (5th ward, p. 566b (image 164 on genealogy.com): Francis Cleber, 73, carpenter, born France. (confirmed) Living with Francis is a likely daughter or granddaughter: Anna, 17, livery?, b. NY

From Ted Clabeaux 23 Feb 2004: Phillip Sr. did give up his youngest daughter to be raised by another family member after his wife died. She was Charlotte Francis Gentlehomme and was called Thaney on some census forms.
