Biography

Philip Beamer11 Carroll 1765-1815: The Settlements, By John Perry Alderman; Published by Alderman Books, 1985, p. 211. Philip Beamer was born in the 1780s and married Rhoda Lundy, daughter of Richard and Mary (Stockton) Lundy, Quakers who had moved to Grayson from North Carolina. Rjoda was born March 30, 1783 in New Jersey, had come to North Carolina as a baby with her parents, and was dismissed from the Quaker meeting in 1798 when she married Philip (1 Hinshaw 966). Philip entered 150 acres on Crooked Creek in 1805 (Grayson, Entry A-109); the tract was described as adjoining Henry Beamer and John Burcham and included Beamer’s dwelling. He later acquired 430 acres more, some of it on Little Reed and some of it on Crooked Creek. He owned it all when he died. Philip did not take much part in the county’s affairs; during the period 1806-1811, covered by the third order book, he testified once and served once as a juror. He was probably a little in his fifties when he died in 1832. His will is probated in November of 1832 (Grayson, W.B. 1-425); it mentions his wife Rhoda and leaves his estate to his children after making provision for her. The will does not name all of the children, but there were eleven of them: (1) Peter L. Beamer (1802-1879) who married Elizabeth Cooley in 1828. (2) Mary Beamer (1804- 1890) who married Isaac Edwards in 1822. (3) Richard Beamer. (4) Charity Beamer who married Garret Williams in 1822. (5) Sally Ann Beamer who married Isaac Branscome in 1830. (6) Isaac Beamer (died in 1877) who married Huldah Harrell. (7) Henry Beamer who married Rachel Cooley in 1839. (8) Frances Beamer who married Newell Combs. (9) Manoah Beaher. (10) Teney Rhoda Beamer who married Jonathan R. Sumner in 1837. (11) Irena Beamer (1823-1907) who married Elijah Edwards in 1839. Philip’s will lists the sons and the three youngest daughters; it also contains a bequest for Mary Beamer Edwards’ oldest son. Sally Ann’s marriage record lists Philip as her father; only Charity Williams’ paternity is not proven in the old records. Rhoda Lundy Beamer was still living in 1850, but apparently died during that decade.
