Obituary:Peter Wakefield dies End comes at home on Garrison this morning Pioneer Jasper County resident and Civil War veteran was 85-Funeral Monday. Peter Wakefield, 85 years old, civil war veteran and a highly respected pioneer of Jasper County, passed away at 6:30 o'clock this morning at the Wakefield home, 1020 South Garrison avenue. Mr. Wakefield had been an invalid for about four years. Three years ago he moved to Carthage from his farm northwest of Carthage because of ill health. He had lived on the farm more than 40 years, being a successful farmer and stock raiser. Born in Lawrence county, Ohio, March 1st 1838, Mr. Wakefield was the youngest of 7 brothers, all of whom served with the Union forces throughout the civil war. He enlisted from Ohio in the Ironton artillery and subsequently in the Seventh Virginia calvary. Mr. Wakefield joined the Methodist church when he was 15 years old and always took a special interest in Sunday school work. He helped organize and build several churches in this vicinity, among them Union Chapel west of the city. He was married to Anna Wolf Februrary 26, 1879. The wife and four children, two sons and two daughters survive. The children are Miss Nellie Wakefield, Mrs. Mark Amsden, James Wakefield and Chester Wakefield. Miss Wakefield is principle of Kendricktown school and lives at home. Mrs. Amsden resides northwest of Carthage on a farm adjoining the Wakefield home place, on which the son, James, resides. The other son is a farmer in Pratt county, Kansas. He probably will be unable to attend the funeral. Two granddaughters, Fay Wakefield and Dorothy Wakefield, daughters of James Wakefield, and a nephew, Willard Wakefield of Carthage, also survive. Outside the immediate family Mr. Wakefield has a cousin, T.G. Wakefield, now 84 years old, residing in Columbus, Ohio. Funeral service will be held at the Knell chapel at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning. The Rev. Dr. O.J. Carder, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church , will be in charge.
