Obituary: Mrs. Anna Wakefield dies Pioneer woman 73, succumbs after 3 weeks' illness

Widow of prominent farmer came to this county 56 years ago-funeral tomorrow afternoon

Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Wakefield, 73 years old, mother of Miss Nellie Wakefield, principle of the Irving school, and a resident of Carthage and vicinity 56 years, died at 4:45 o'clock this mornig at her home, 1020 S. Garrison avenue.

Mrs. Wakefield had been ill the last three weeks from heart disease, which followed an attack of influenza. Her condition had been critical several days.

Born February 27, 1858, near Terre Haute Ind., Mrs. Wakefield came to this district with an older brother, Joseph Wolf, and his family, when she was 17 years old. Both of her parents passed away when she was quite young and she made her home with her brother . They made the trip to this country in covered wagons and settled on a farm about four miles northwest of Carthage.

She was married February 26, 1879 in Carthage to Peter Wakefield, a pioneer of this district and a neighbor of the Wolf family. Mr. Wakefield traveled overland to Jasper county from Proctorsville, Ohio, the year following the close of the civil war. His farm was only a half mile from the Wolf place and he and his bride moved there, making that thier home until they moved to Carthage in 1920. A son J.M. Wakefield, now lives on the old home place. Mr. Wakefield passed away in 1923.

Mrs. Wakefield was a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She first became a member of the Union chapel northwest of the city, which Mr. Wakefield helped build. After moving to Carthage she transferred her membership to the First M.E. church here. She was also a member of the First M.E. Woman's Home Missionary Society. She was a charter member of the Monroe W.C.T.U. and retained her membership in that organization until her death. She was widely known and greatly beloved.

Surviving are four children, Miss Nellie Wakefield, who made her home with her mother, Mrs. Luella Amsden, who lives northwest of Carthage, J.M. Wakefield, northwest of the city, and C.E. Wakefield of Commerce. Okla., and a sister, Mrs. E.T. Hales of Essex, Iowa. Mrs Hales is now the last of a family of 13 children.

Four grandchildren also survive. They are Miss Faye Wakefield who is a sophmore in the high school here, Dorothy June and Merrill Wakefield, children of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Wakefield, and Chester Milo Wakefield, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Wakefield. Several neices, who are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wolf, with whom Mrs. Wakefield made her home also survive. They are Mrs. N.T. Miller, Mrs. Bessie Allen, Mrs. Grace Overlee all of Joplin and Mrs. Arthur Stephenson of California.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Knell service home. The Rev. J.F. King, superintendent of the Freeman Hospital, Joplin will be in charge. Burial will be in the family lot in Park cemetery.
