Bureau of Land Management sales to Peter Smith, 1825, 1830, 1837 all in Fayette County, IN. 1837 Peter purchased a parcel in Clark Township, Section 5, Township 13 North, Range 5 East. His earlier purchases were in White River Township, Range 3 East. It appears that Peter moved from Fayette County IN to Johnson County after March 1837 and before September 1839, according to the residences listed on the deed. Peter owned two parcels of property when he died in 1854; however, there was no entry in the grantor index in his name or estate of ... to indicate a sale after his death..

Peter Smith left a will dated May 6, 1848 and recorded February 4, 1854 in Will Book 2, pages 21-23 in Johnson County, IN. The microfilm images are difficult to read, so Ms. Warren got permission to copy the recorded will from the original Will book. Peter's son Andrew J. was bequeathed $5.00. Andrew was not listed among the heirs in the final settlement. [Common Pleas Court Book 2, page 174, Franklin, Johnson County IN, July 31, 1856] He may have received his inheritance earlier. Peter's children, listed in the final settlement were John E. [wife Ann Covert], William K. [wife Jane? Elizabeth?], Eliza [Ezra Darby, Andrew married his sister Hester], Jacob, Nathan, Mary Ann [spouse Barnabas Messersmith], Delany [Simpson A. Messersmith], Martha Jane [Nathaniel McCalla]..
