  16. Pioneer Beulah Businessman Dies
One of Beulah's oldest pioneers was taken Saturday in the passing of Percy A. Reed. Born in Kalamazoo in 1864, his father was a shoemaker who made shoes from tanned hides and wooden nails.
In 1887 he married Mary Beem of Fremont, with whom he lived 64 years, until her death four years ago. They came to Beulah in 1902 to run a general store in what is now the “Five and Ten”. He enlarged the structure and built a fire wall which saved the building during the Oddfellow hall - A&P store fire about 1935.
His long career in Beulah made him probably the oldest continuous resident, and few were better known than he was during the active years of his business life. He retired in 1937. He was a life member of the Masonic and Oddfellows orders and belonged to the Benzonia Congregational Church.
Surviving are four children: Maurice, of Beulah, Mrs. Edith Wolfe of Miller, South Dakota, Orville, of Camden, Michigan, and Herbert, of Midland, Michigan. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Bennett Funeral Home at Frankfort Monday afternoon, Rev. Hume Ward, II officiating, with burial in the Benzonia township cemetery.
