THE POOR BOY
Fatal Ending of an Overland Journey-Sydney Durrant’s Leg Amputated
Sydney Durrant a 15 year old boy was brought into the city on No. 1 express terribly mutilated condition and taken to the general hospital where he now lies hovering between life and death. He was very much bruised about the face and the left arm and left leg had each sustained a compound fracture. After thoroughly diagnosing the case the physicians found it necessary to amputate the leg. The story is rather a sad one. Young Durrant left his home near St. Jovite (Saint Faustin Rang 14 lot 9) near Ottawa in company with his 19 year old brother Frank (Frank Victor), with a view of walking to Whitewood. N. W. T. where they have a brother (Percy William) and sister (Nellie = Clara Ellen Laverna) and uncle residing. By stealing ride occasionally they reached near Barclay. Here the younger of the two jumped moving from a moving box car, stuck the side of a snow drift and rolled underneath the train, sustaining the terrible injuries which will probably cost him his life, although Dr Lawrence says there is yet a chance of recovery. The eider lad came along from Barclay his wounded brother and was allowed to sleep at the hospital. Bosh are destitute of finances – Nor’- Wester
