The Children & Descendants of Bennett Hiram Zachary and Penelope Davis Edited by Clovis LaFleur, Jan 2000 Mary Matilda Zachary (This account was published in the 1983 Asa Stark Newsletter and written by Pauline Moore, the granddaughter of Mary Matilda Zachary.) John Lawhorn "Jack" Stark's Family John Lawhorn “Jack” Stark was the third child of Asa Lafitte Stark. He was born July 20, 1848, probably in the Belgrade community in Newton County, Texas. His mother, Matilda Donaho Stark died when he was only 9 years old. In 1857 his father married Miss Hester M. Ford in Newton County.

When Jack was nineteen years old he married Miss Mary Matilda Zachary. The ceremony was held at her mother's (Penelope Davis) home, October 15, 1867 with the Reverend Mc Mayhand officiating. The family moved from Newton County to the central part of the state around 1869. Jack and Mary Matilda acquired property in Franklin, Texas. This property was sold in 1883.

Eight children were born to this marriage. Two died in infancy, and one little girl, Hettie May died when she was 7 years old of snake bite Other children were;

William Oscar Stark, born October 1869, married Ada May Bush 12 Dec. 1889 Rachael Penelope Stark, born 15 March 1873, married William Bollen Cox 1 March 1888 Oliver Eugene Stark, born 7 Feb. 1875, married 1. Cynthia Malinda Marlow 23 Dec. 1892, 2. Marquerite R. Fisch 20 April, 1917 Asa Carrington ( Kank) Stark, born 18 July 1881, married Carrie White 17 October 1916 Henry Edward ( Ed) Stark, born 3 Feb. 1885, married Martha Ann Welbourn 20, Dec. 1903

Jack was a carpenter and cabinet maker and had a shop in Normangee, Texas. He preached in the area around Wheelock and Macy, Texas, where the family lived until shortly before he died. Family tradition says that Jack served in the Confederate Army and was mustered in under Captain Rice in 1865. We have not been able to authenticate this. Jack also helped to lay the cornerstone for the Robertson County Court House at Franklin.

Mary Matilda was paralyzed when Carrington was born. She spent the rest of her life crippled and unable to walk, however when Oliver's wife Cynthia became very ill and later died , she and Jack took the young family and cared for the children. Mary Matilda died 29 December 1917 at Macy, Texas. John wrote a very moving poem about his wife and his love for her. He died 20 December 1926 at Jacksonville, Texas. The love he and his loving wife shared will be passed on to his family for generations to come. Frances Jane Zachary
