    He [Winfield Moore] came to what is now Newton County in 1834 as a fugitive from Ga. He changed his name to William M. Davis. His wife Nancy's slaves brought her & Turner, Martha, Penelope and Cynthia to join him. He brought Pleasant B. Moore/Davis with him when he came. They lived a good life here and had four other children born in Newton Co on DAVIS CREEK. The Davis Community was named for him. Bennet Hiram Zachary & Penelopoe Davis were married 19 August, 1847 in Newton County. Later, Winfield/William fought in the war for Texas Independence. Also his son Pleasant. The family moved to Texas in 1834. Memorial Bench placed in Davis Cemetery on FM Road 363 for Winfield and Nancy. Placques attached: "Citizens of the Republic of Texas"
