Information on Paulus Custer

Biography of Paulus Custer, by Craig Beeman (omb@ponyexpress.net):

BIOGRAPHY: PAULUS KUSTER, farmer and mason; b. 1644 to 1646, Kaldenkirchen, GE; m. in the Reformed church, 10-16-1668, Kaldenkirchen, GE, GERTRUDE DOORS (b. ca 1645, Kaldenkirchen, GE, and d. prior to 2-23-1708, Philadelphia, PA); d. Jan or Feb 1707/8, Philadelphia, PA; nuncupative will dated 28 Jan 1707/8, proved 23 Feb 1707/8. Paulus was reared as a Roman Catholic. Gertrude and her parents had been in the Reformed Church since 1655. Came to Germantown, PA, in 1684. He was both a Mennonite and pacifist. The state churches in Europe were still closely associated to the government which made life miserable for those who did not share the persecutor's religious beliefs. During this time the Mennonites were assessed special taxes simply to live on their land, and were forbidden to leave the cities or to learn a trade. They were often forced to sell their lands to state church members upon request, without renumeration for improvements made on the property; and finally, they were denied the right of burial in the public cemeteries. He was naturalized with his son, Johannes, in 1691. His name appears on a 1693 tax list of heads of families residing in Germantown. He was a chosen committeeman of the corporation of Germantown on 2 Dec 1700. He purchased fifty acres of land, 4 Dec 1704, from Henry BUCHHOLTZ, and on 1-5-1706, he was appointed overseer of fences in Germantown. Paulus and Gertrude KUSTER and their family were among the early founders of the first Mennonite Church in America, in Philadelphia. The first log church was built in 1708.
