Paul G. Ruch, 46, of Franklin Park, active and devoted Scout Master, died Sept. 11. Mr. Ruch was born Sept. 24, 1954, the son of Dorothy, nee Hoffman and George Ruch.
Mr. Ruch's lifelong activities and commitment to the Scouting program in Franklin Park began when he joined the Scouts at age 8.
He was scoutmaster for Troop 152 for nine years, was an assistant scoutmaster for 14 years and was a Cub master for 24 years. He was commissioner for 12 years and received the highest Commissioner Arrow Award presented.
Troop 152 has 45 Eagle Scouts, and it was under Mr. Ruch's leadership that 35 Scouts obtained this rank. He also taught Scouts to attain the Religious Award.
He was the committee chairman of the Explorer Troop for 11 years. He had received the Silver Beaver, an adult award from the Scout council, and the Award of Merit from the district council. The Vigil Award was also presented to him. All three are the highest awards attainable to Scouts for service.
He and his Scouts were very active in the community. Some of the services they provided included: cleaning up the grounds at Westlake Pavilion and Altenheim; passing out fliers for the Kiwanis breakfasts; assisting the Kiwanis Peanut Drive; helping to clean up the Des Plaines River; and donating funds and services to save Boy Scout Camp Shin Go Beek, when the new council wanted to sell it.
Mr. Ruch attended St. Gertrude School, Franklin Park. He served as an altar boy for many years, as well as an acolyte as an adult. He was a graduate of Holy Cross High School, River Grove.
He volunteered for many years to help the Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus and Lions Club with fund-raisers. He also helped with the Tootsie Roll drive of the Leyden Retarded Center for Adults, River Grove, for many years; and did volunteer work for West Suburban Special Recreation Association and the Food Pantry.
For all his Scouting, volunteer activities and civic involvement, Mr. Ruch was named the 1999 Individual of the Year by the Franklin Park Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He was employed by the Chicago Tribune as a distribution manager and had previously worked for Leyden News for 24 years.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Ruch is survived by his brothers, Russell (Karen), Timothy (Ruth), Phillip (Christina) and Andrew Ruch and sisters, Christine Ruch, Susan (Henry) Lechowicz and Mary (William) Wagner. He was preceded in death by his father.
