About Paul Hughes
- Paul A. Hughes, son of Hughes Markets founder Joseph Hughes, was born abt. 1933. He served as the longtime Corporate Secretary and Personnel Manager of Hughes Family Markets for 35 years. After his death, the Community Foundation of the Verdugos established "The Paul A. Hughes Foundation" in 2002. His daughter, Teresa Hughes Velona, Director of the Hughes Foundation, said: "My father wanted us to carry on and support the Glendale-area that he loved for the majority of his life. We felt that the ability of the Community Foundation's staff to advise us of philanthropic opportunities in our own community would help us make strategic grants and really help people". - BURBANK, Calif. -- Funeral services have been held here for Paul A. Hughes, longtime corporate secretary of the former Hughes Family Markets chain. Hughes, 67, died of cancer. He spent 35 years as corporate secretary of the chain founded by his father, the late Joseph P. Hughes.

- Paul A. Hughes, 67, son of the late founder of Hughes Markets. The grocery chain, recently absorbed into the Ralph's chain, was started in 1952 by Joseph P. Hughes, who opened his first store in Studio City. The Hughes group grew to more than 40 markets in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. Paul Hughes, by choice, spent his career as personnel manager of the grocery chain rather than assuming any top management post. After his father died in 1982, his mother Elsa became chairman of the board. On Tuesday in Los Angeles of cancer.
