Patrick Powers is in the 1880 census in Royalston. His birthplace looks like Ireland, but is hard to read. Upon Googling on Patrick Powers + Royalston, the following death record appears, seemine to confirm that Ireland was the place: Date of death: May 19,1901, deceased: John M. Powers, 46 Northampton, Ms. M Birthplaces of parents: Ireland Ireland Parents of deceased: Patrick Powers Mary Barr. In the 1880 Census, 4 of our Bessie Powers siblings were living at home and working at the local Woolen Mill. They ranged in age from 16 to 22. If John M was a member of this family, it may be consistent for him to no longer to be at home at his age of 26. See http://www.ci.keene.nh.us/library/vitalstatistics/d1900_03.htm, and search for Patrick Powers.

Genealogy Notes, 10/19/05 of Jack Taylor while on a 'Going Home' trip with his wife Nancy & brother Bill:

Royalston: We drove from Baldwinville to South Royalston, which is on both the railroad and the Miller’s River (which was over its banks due to the recent heavy rains). There was no obvious former site of the woolen mill where my grandmother Bessie Powers, 18, was listed as working in the 1880 Census while still living at home with her parents, Patrick and Mary Powers (before marrying Albert Merrill Taylor). Bill thought that houses looked familiar from visits he remembers (and I don’t) to (great) Aunt Julia’s. When I checked my notes of the Census, I found that Bessie had a sister Julia. What a memory Bill has!

We went on to Royalston, where the houses are quite large and old. There is a library in Royalston, which was not open, so we couldn’t check for town directories, etc.

I surmise that the Powers lived in South Royalston, near the Woolen Mill, not 5 miles away in Royalston.
