Facts and Events
When her mother died Olive was thirteen years old. With four younger sisters and a younger brother, Olive very early assumed the mother role. She assisted in the management of the household during her high school years, graduating in 1903 as second honor student. From 1903 to 1907 she managed her father's household, spending a few months in 1906 to study water color and china painting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was active in church being president of St. Petri Ladies' Aid, Story City, in 1914 and again in 1931. After she was married, Peter and Olive's home was a meeting place for many Marvick and Donhowe relatives. In her efficient, gracious manner, Olive welcomed relatives and friends alike. In 1972 her daughter, Laurentia, wrote, "As I think of her, it is this trait that is most evident - the nurturing, maternal concern for her younger sisters and brother, for her own children, and later for her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews."
