Newyear was named after his maternal grandfather.

Newyear's parents married in England in 1830 and I assume that they emigrated first to the United States. They moved to Kingston in Upper Canada (now Ontario) in the 1830s. After a few years there they moved again to Reach Township where they purchased a farm. Censuses and death registration confirm that Newyear's later siblings were all born there.

   The date of birth was calculated from the death date as found both on the gravestone and the death registration. April 6 was the first day of the year in the old calendar.

4. ↑ There is much conflicting evidence for Newyear's birthplace. Some censuses give United States, some give Ontario, or the specific place of Kingston, Ontario. This is also true for his next brother, George.
