OBITUARY

MR. NATHANIEL DRURY

The Lower Manning District lost one of its best known and most highly es-teemed residents early on Tuesday evening when Mr. Nathaniel Drury passed away at his home at Pampoolah. He had been ill for some weeks previously and the end was expected. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Drury, and was born at Jones Island 80 years ago. As a youth he was apprenticed to Mr. Duncan Allan, of Cundletown, to learn his trade as a black-smith. Later he worked for Mr. Cameron at Croki, and then joined Mr. S. T. Lean's staff at Taree. Ill health necessitated a change of occupation, and he moved on to Mr. W. Poison's farm at Oxley Island, and subsequently he had farms on Moto and Coopernook, finally moving on to the Pam-poolah property over 30 years ago. The late Mr. Drury was a man who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He was straight forward in all his actions, his relations with his fellows being governed by a high sense of Christian principles. All his life he was actively associated with the Salvation Army, and was married to Miss Annie Bryan, of Albury, who, as Captain Bryan, opened the first Salvation Army Corps at Taree. In addition to his widow, he is survived by the following children: Messrs Alfred Drury (Minimbah), Victor (Sydney), Mesdames E. Kerr (at home), W. Bray (Moorland), W. G. Wilkins (Taree), and O. Mitten (Sydney). Two sons predeceased him, namely Percy (Mitchell's Island), and the other died in infancy. The brothers are Messrs. C. E. Drury (Glenthorne), William and Jonas (Taree), Edward (Moto), Andrew (Lansdowne), Harold (Hannam Vale), and Stanley (Bowraville). The only sister is Mrs. S. McAlpin, of Lansdowne. The other brother was the late George Drury, of Lansdowne. At 2 p.m. on Thursday a service was conducted at the Salvation Army Hall, following which the cortege, headed by the Corps Band, proceeded to the Dawson cemetery. Major Powley, of Sydney, and formerly of Taree, conducted the service, assisted by Major Bailey. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. S. W. Bridge.

MR. NATHANIEL DRURY.

With the passing of Mr. Nathaniel Drury, who died at his residence, at Oxley Island, on Tuesday night this district has lost one of its best known residents, who was held in general esteem in the community. The late Mr. Drury, who was 80½ years of age had been a well known identity of the district for many years. He was born at Jones' Island and had been residing in the Man-ning district all his life. He was edu-cated at the Gbinni Ghinni School, and his first position after he left was at Cundle with the late Mr. Dun-can Allan, as an apprentice to the blacksmith trade. Later he was employed in the same trade by the late Mr. Cameron at Croki, where he remained for a few years. Subsequently he was employed by the late Mr. S. T. Lean, of Taree as a blacksmith. Leaving this trade over 50 years ago Mr. Drury leased a farm at Oxley Is-land where he followed dairy farming pursuits for seven years, and later he carried on dairy farming activities at Moto and at Coopernook for periods of seven and two years respectively. The family then return-ed to Oxley Island where Mr. Drury rented the farm known as 'Green-wood' situated close to the pro-perty he had previously leased at Oxley Island. He built a new cottage on this property and had been liv-ing in retirement there for the past 10 years. Mr. Drury was one of the first members of the Taree Corps of the Salvation Army, and was a prominent member oi the corps for many years. The officer who came to Taree 58 years ago to open the corps, Captain Annie Bryan, of Albury, became Mr. Drury's wife, and together they worked for the advancement of the corps with excellent results, doing much to put the corps on a sound footing. Throughout the 58 years of its existence the corps has had members of the Drury family in its ranks. Mr. Drury, who was an estimable husband and father is survived by his wife and the following family: Alfred (Minimbah), Victor (Sydney). Eva (Mrs. Carr, Oxley Island), Ivy (Mrs. V. J. Bray, Moorland), Ainnie (Mrs. Geo. Wilkius, Taree), Olive (Mrs. Albert Mitten, Strathfield). The following brothers and sisters also survive: Messrs. C. E. Drury (Glenthorne), William and Jonas (Taree), Edward (Moto), Alfred (Chatham), Andrew (Lansdowne), Harold (Hannam Vale), Stanley (Bowraville) and Mrs. S. McAlpin (Lansdowne). The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon leaving the Taree Salvation Army Hall for the Dawson Cemetery. The Salvation Army Band marched in front of the hearse until the cortege reached Boyce Street, and again played during the service at the cemetery. The service was conducted by Major Powley, of Sydney, an old friend of the late Mr. Drury who shortly before his death requested that Major Powley should officiate. He was assisted by Major Bailey, officer in charge of the Taree Corps.
