BIOGRAPHY: Minnie Knight Perry in her manuscript wrote of herself: "Born Oct. 26, 1870 at Greenville, Ala. Was educated in and graduated from So. Ala. Female Institute, a Baptist College, and took First Honor in school and was given a beautiful gold medal in recognition of the honor (One medal was offered for highest grade in studies and one for best deportment and she won both, so the value of both was put into one medal). Had mezzo-soprano voice which was highly cultivated. She considered her voice a gift from God and for many years sang the Gospel, being soloist in First Baptist Church, Temple, Tex. and it was her privilege to sing for the comfort of the bereaved hundreds of times. It was her joy to be able to teach in Sunday-school, with short intermissions, for 36 yrs. Ill health coming with old age caused her to give up teaching but she does lighter work in her Church and S.S. now. (This was written Dec. 1940.) On April 5, 1892 she was married to John Simeon Perry, of Temple, Texas, a newspaper editor and later proprietor and editor of Temple Tribune, and later editor of Temple Telegram. |
