BIOGRAPHY: John: After his mother died in 1869 he lived with his Aunt Kate Merring Howe in Covington, KY. He later lived with his Uncle Elijah Merring while attending school in Cincinatti, Ohio. Uncle Elijah's family called him Perry, since they already had a John and they did not want to call him Simeon because of the hostility they felt toward his father according to a letter from Elijah Merring to Minnie Knight Perry dated 21st July, 1904 from Cincinatti, Ohio.
