Early Land Acquisition in Orange County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:


  • Page 32. Michael Claure's land being 698 acres for which he has taken out a pattent in his own and his son John Claur's name, is divided between him the said Michael Claure and his son John Claure.. the upper part being 400 acres is appropriated for John Claure and the lower one being 298 (acres) to Michael Clore. Admitted to record. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 1, Dorman, pg. 3].
  • Pages 224-25. 28 Aug. 1740. Robert Green, Gent., Sheriff of Orange County, to Michael Clore of same, planter. On 27 7ber [Sept.] 1739, Zachary Lewis, Gent. obtained a judgement for ₤3.12.6 in a suit by attachment against the estate of Zachary Martin together with an order for sale by certain land belonging to Martin. In a suit by attachment for ₤18 current money, the Sheriff attached 200 acres between the land where Martin lived and the land of Broadly. Plaintiff proved his account to be ₤3.12.6. Robert Green in Feb. 1739 [1740] exposed the land to sale by public auction. Michael Clore bid ₤5 current money and was the highest bidder. (signed) Robert Green S.O.C. Wit: James Porteus, Jno.
